At this time of year, we all start to think about the resolutions we want to make for the New Year. While some of those are set with good intentions, they don’t always last. Some get six months into the year, and some don’t even pass January. So, this year, instead of setting resolutions that you know you won’t keep, think differently!
In 2017, why not concentrate on your personal growth? With resolutions, you do aim to change your habits or improve your lifestyle, but when you focus on yourself on a person, you have the power to do so much more. This New Years put more energy into all areas of your life and see what a difference your can make over the next 12 months.
First up, let’s talk health. Resolutions centered around health are always standard for New Years. But a lot of the time, people make extreme changes to their lifestyle, which aren’t always that realistic. So, for 2017, think about the little changes you can make that might just stick for life.
Be More Conscious
Most of the time, we move and eat like clockwork. If we’re used to doing very minimal exercise, we don’t make an effort to change that. We drive rather than walk and get takeout rather than cook just because those choices seem easier. But, you can improve overall health by just being more conscious of what you’re eating, how much you’re eating and how much exercise you are or are not getting. It will soon make you realize what small changes you need to make.
It’s not always easy to stay motivated. If you have a weight loss goal or want to improve your general health and well being, it can be an idea to try and push yourself. Sometimes, when you have an end goal or due date, you have to get things done. So, why not challenge yourself to run a 5k or 10k race? Start small, but give yourself a health goal to work for this year.
In life, we have many relationships. Not just the romantic ones we have, but the bonds we have with family and the connections we have with friends, colleagues, and associates. They’re all important, and some can take more work than others. So, for 2017, don’t give up on anyone – put more effort in instead.
Family comes first. They always have done and always will. If you have a toxic relationship with any family member, try to look at it objectively. You might always blame them for their ways, but is holding a grudge healthy for either of you? Instead, work on it, forgive and forget for 2017. You want to make the most of life, every second of every day. So make your relationships with family count and start getting more out of them over the next 12 months.
Family and friends can be testing at times, but they’re nothing compared to the relationship you have with your partner. If you’re head over heels in love, never forget that. Work on your relationship each and every day. Give because you want to and love endlessly. If you’re single, think about what you want from a significant other and hold on to that. Look for it and never give up. That person is out there, just have faith.
Depending on your life goals, your career will matter to you or it won’t. Whether you’re just in a job to make a dime and support your family, or to build a career for life, there’s a lot you can focus on for 2017.
How is your career going? Do you think you’re on track for achieving your goals? If not, what can 2017 do for your progression? Reflect on the areas that you can improve for work. Get more experience, network more, prove yourself and ask for that promotion when you do. Career progression is out there; it’s just waiting for you to chase it down and catch it.
Maybe you’re not getting anywhere in your current role, and it’s time for a change? Or, you’re quite happy at your level, but something just doesn’t feel right. You need to change hours to suit your home life, or just ease off a little. If that’s the case, then maybe the next year has a career change in store for you?
Money can be a difficult subject. But that doesn’t mean we have to ignore it and suffer. Instead, think about your financial situation right now and where you want it to be. If you’re doing okay, but you’d like it to be better, prioritize that. Or, if you’re trying to pay off debts, it’s time to get a plan of action and get them gone once and for all.
One way of looking at your finances is considering what you earn. When it comes to your career, are you in a position to ask for a raise? If not, can you get yourself to the level where it’s possible? Also, does your income come from one source, such as your job? If so, how can you diversify that? There are so many ways that you can make extra cash, whether that’s getting a second job, selling items you no longer need or generating an online income from a blog. Regardless of which avenue you choose, you now have an aim or two to work towards over the next 12 months.
Aside from what you earn, you can also look at the savings you can make. When it comes to what you spend and what you save away, you can make a huge improvement to your financial situation by looking at both. Are there areas of your life you can cut back on financially? Work out what you spend and then decide. And, think about the savings you have. Do you have enough or could you be contributing more each month?
A lot of the time, people tend to think of resolutions as a means to cutting back or stopping things. Instead, by focusing on yourself, you can make improvements to your life that aren’t centered around losses at all.
We all have hobbies, even if it’s just one. Whether you play a sport, like to read, or knit, why not make 2017 the year that you focus on the things that you love. Life doesn’t have to be all work and no play, it can be as much work and play as you want. The balance you have between the two is entirely up to you, so why not focus on the fun this year?
Do you have an interest that you’re so passionate about, you think you could do it as a job? If so, turn your hobby or passion into a career, and you’ll never work a day for the rest of your life. Work never feels like work if you love it. So if you’re a budding entrepreneur, apply yourself and your passion could take you to place you’ve only ever dreamed of.
We all have dreams. Some are to play major league baseball, and some are to have a huge family with a home we’re proud of. No matter what they are, work on getting a little closer to them over the next 12 months.
So, how is your life currently looking? Are you in love with it? If not, it’s time to fall head over feels for it. Think about what you want your life to look like and make the changes necessary to get closer to it. Whether that’s changing your frame of mind, working harder or even moving across the country. 2017 could be the year to make the right start in life.
If you have one, two, or more goals in life, are you on track to reach them? If not, then why not? What can you do in 2017 that will help you get closer to achieving your goals? No matter how big or how small they are, you can take steps over the next year that can get you that little bit closer.
And last but not least, it’s on to the most important area of all: YOU!
This year could be the year that you finally put yourself first. However hard that may be, 2017 could be the right time to start thinking about your overall wellbeing. Are you happy? If not, what can you change that will make you happy? No matter what area of your life it falls into, commit to making that change and focus on your happiness above all.
Mindfulness has the power to do so much. By being more conscious in life, you could transform yourself into everything you’ve always wanted to be: happy. Think about the ways you can be more mindful in life. Whether that’s with your health or your relationships, or being grateful for you life, each and every day. Being mindful could be the difference between a tough or successful 2017 for you.
