Does the thought of the gym make you feel nauseous? Can you think of nothing worse than leaving the house to go on a gruelling 5k run? For many of us, organised workouts are the very bane of our lives. Gyms can be intimidating places and what works for another person may not necessarily work for you. But with the rising trend for working out and ‘eating clean’, you might be wondering how you can keep fit without changing your entire lifestyle. One of the best ways to keep fit is to take up an activity where you don’t even really notice you’re exercising. Of course, fitness-focused boot camps and intense gym sessions do serve a purpose for some of us. But if you want to prioritize fun over a stressful, goal focused session, why not try out some of the innovative fitness activities below?
Okay, so these aren’t exactly for the faint hearted. But taking on an obstacle course challenge can be just the push you need to up your fitness game. You don’t need to be in the best shape of your life to take part, as most of these events aren’t races. In fact, most of them are for charity, so it’s a great opportunity to do something to help benefit others too. There are courses of different lengths and difficulties all over the country, so shop around to see which one takes your fancy. Who knows, once you’ve done one you might get hooked and want to do them all!
If you haven’t heard of Zumba, just where have you been for the past five years? Zumba is an innovative dance fitness programme that was created by accident (yes, really!) in the 1990s. Colombian fitness instructor Alberto Perez apparently forgot the usual music he taught his aerobics class to – so instead had to improvise the routine to Latin music. It was such a hit that he started to develop his own routines to the same style of music, and as they say, the rest is history. Zumba is now one of the most popular ways to keep fit, and studies show that working out as a group can help to boost morale and overall results. Contact your local fitness centres to find a Zumba dance class for fitness and workout near you.
A fitness holiday
Before you stop reading, this isn’t like a boot camp! Instead, why not book a weekend break to somewhere beautiful where you can hike, or go skiing for a couple of days? You’ll be so engrossed by beautiful scenery and the fact that you’re out of your usual routine that you won’t even notice that you’re working out whilst doing so. It gives you a great opportunity to get away with a friend or partner too, and you won’t come home feeling sluggish like many of us do after a normal vacation. Plus, after a long day of being on the slopes, you won’t feel so guilty about that extra glass of wine at dinner!
