Natalie is a graduate of Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts, and has recently returned from UK tour with David Hasselhoff in “Last Night a DJ Saved My Life”.
Hi Natalie, congratulations on your debut single. Can you tell our readers a little bit about yourself?
My name is Natalie gray. I’m a singer/songwriter from Reading. I’ve recently performed at London Pride at Trafalgar Square and supported the incredible MiC LOWRY at Lytham festival.
How did you get started with playing – singing – creating music?
I’ve been singing and writing lyrics my whole life, but I’ve initially wanted to be a dancer so I trained at a dance college in London. But only after graduating, I’ve properly started writing music again with a friend of mine and discovered hey, I’m actually not bad at this ha!
What inspires you to write a song (most of times)?
My inspiration always comes from a personal experience, all of my songs have a personal meaning to me. Be it a break up, a crush, a good party I went to etc. I find inspirational mainly when I’m really busy. I find writing helps to clear my brain.
What’s your next goal as a musician?
My next goal is to finish the new material I’m writing/recording at the moment with some incredible producers such as Alive By Night and release some new music.
Who are you favourite current songwriters or musicians?
My all time favourite artists are Gavin Degraw, Katy Perry and Michael Jackson. For lots of reasons, but mainly because they’re all incredible performers and really put on a show. You don’t just listen to their music, you watch what they’re doing and the story they’re telling.
Can you tell us more about your hobbies and interests?
I’m very into fitness as well, I love circus skills such as aerial hoop and pole fitness. These are skills that will be coming on tour with me!
Where do you like to eat and go out in London, any top tips?
Hmmm…. London is amazing for choice, it’s the old Netflix conundrum! I love the The Rainforecast Cafe (the kid in me) and also highly addicted to Pizza Express! On a night out I tend to go to gigs such as at The Bedford or Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, but I’m also partial to a cheesy night out at Infernos in Clapham!
When you are not busy working, what do you like to do to unwind and relax?
I’m a big series addict. So when I have a spare moment I’m catching up on Sons of Anarchy, Orange is The New Black, Walking Dead etc.
What does a typical day look like for you?
A typical day is me snoozing my alarm, a quick work out, a rushed shower and running to the tube to go studio for recording or a writing session. Getting home late evening catching up on emails and crawling into my pjs with a good cuppa!
Do you have a favourite quote?
I live by what’s meant to happen will happen, life is too short, do what makes you happy, be silly – be weird. But mainly “They said I couldn’t, so I did”
Who is your biggest inspiration in music and life?
My biggest inspiration in music is probably Katy Perry (you can tell I’m a big fan), but I just love how she’s always stuck to her guns and been true to who she is. I watched an interview where she spoke about walking away from her first label and she said “they want me to be the next Avril Lavigne or the next Alanis Morissette, I just want to be the first Katy Perry”. So here you go.
