If your New Year resolution is to get healthy and stay in shape, here are 5 tips to help you get started.

1.  Find your Motivation

The best way to get started is to make a list of your goals. Start with simple goals and then progress to longer range goals. For example, if you haven’t hit the gym in a while, a short term goal might be like to exercise 20 minutes a day three days a week. Remember to make your goals realistic and achievable. Avoid goals like ‘GIVING UP your favorite snacks’. If you think you need to cut down on your favourite chocolate brownies or everyday coffee, do it gradually.  It’s easy to get frustrated and give up if your goals are too ambitious.

2.  Plan ahead and track your progress

Once you set your goals, start planning. Get a professional help if you need to. Keeping a fitness journal will help you to keep your exercise routine on track and check the progress since you’ve started. Keep track of each small success. Short-term goals are easier to keep, and each small accomplishment will help keep you motivated.

3. Find an activity you enjoy

Don’t like running? Not enjoying yoga either? That’s totally fine. Everyone is different and what works for one doesn’t always work for another. whether it’s yoga, spinning or lap-swimming, and give each a try for two weeks. It may take some time to figure out your favorite activity, but its worth it.

4. Watch what you eat

The important part of your fitness battle is your diet. Making a diet plan will help you monitor how your eating fits with your exercise routine.

5. Aim for 7-8 hours sleep per night

Sleep is a crucial factor in losing weight and improving your fitness performance. For optimal health, you will want to sleep about 7 to 8 hours each night. To improve your performance, you have to allow your body to heal. When you do not sleep enough, you will stay fatigued and your performance level will drop. Sleeping enough will allow your body to rest, recover and grow stronger.
